She found resources on the other side of town - the Clare Foundation in Santa Monica - and went into treatment, becoming part of a sober community. The last time Susan walked free of prison, a smug guard waved her off with this line: "I'll see you back in a little while." Those words became the prompt to turn her life around. She found herself caught up in the vicious cycle of addiction and spent 20 years in and out of prison on drug-related felonies. Losing a child this way cannot be imagined by most, and it's hardly surprising Susan turned to drugs as blanket over her grief. Behind the wheel was an off-duty LA police officer although Susan recognizes the tragedy as an accident, the officer never apologized to her for her child's death. These destructive cycles continue unabated in families and communities until someone strong, brave, and filled with a mighty big empathy stands up to lead others to help break the chain.Īs a young mother, Susan's five-year-old son ran into the street and was struck by a car and killed. Between black brown and white, there are many core similarities in the cycles of working class poverty with addiction topping the list, but the scale is vastly tilted toward people of color on the losing end time after time. There is a desperation that fuels survival against all odds, and sometimes the shield reached for is a balm of nullification. I'm talking the type of emotional pain that all too often grows wild in the darkness of poverty, trauma, lack of opportunity and educational resources. To work through pain often requires a healing hand, a therapist, a loving community. Drug addiction is an insidious blanket to cover pain. In 2020, they won a Sustainable Quality Excellence Award for Environmental Stewardship and Economic Development.At first, Susan's story didn't feel unusual to me, having been incarcerated as a kid alongside girls whose mothers were addicted to drugs, as was mine. To fulfill the above measures and more to achieve their green certification, The Santa Monica Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center implemented a robust environmental policy statement and established a "Green Team" led by administrators to integrate sustainability practices facility wide. To do their part for pollution prevention, they transitioned their daily floor cleaner and hand-washing soap to Green Seal certified Ecolab products. Further waste reduction is accomplished in-house by serving food in reusable dishware and providing cups for refilling water and hot beverages. ![]() The Salvation Army organization as a whole, via their resale stores, contributes to large-scale landfill diversion of materials by reselling items. Salvation Army Santa Monica participated in the City’s Water Neutrality Direct Install Program to upgrade all water fixtures to high-efficiency flows at not cost 10 toilets, 5 urinals and several sink faucet aerators. ![]() In addition, motion sensors for lighting, and photocells were installed throughout the campus. The Santa Monica location chose the 100% renewable energy option via the Clean Power Alliance community choice provider, upgraded all washer and dryers to Energy Star rated machines and replaced 220 fluorescent 4-foot tubes with LEDs at no charge via LED Partnership, who partners with trade associations to facilitate massive buying power and price advantages from suppliers to benefit commercial buildings. They have 59 inpatient beds, and offer a 6-12 month, residential, holistic, faith based, 12-step social model program with a work therapy component. Since 1954, The Santa Monica Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center has provided emotional, spiritual and social assistance to those who have lost the ability to cope and provide for themselves. The Salvation Army operates the largest and most successful nationwide network of No-Fee Adult Rehabilitation Centers providing the tools needed to overcome Alcohol & Drug dependence, and homelessness.
